Bearded Dragon Food
If you are about to begin your first experience with a “Beardie” as a pet, then it’s wise to be prepared if you want a healthy and friendly companion. Before you buy a dragon, be sure you are well aware of what, when and how they eat and the particular varieties of bearded dragon food you need. As with any other animal or reptile, a properly fed and nourished one, is a healthy and happy one!
Apart for the insects, greens and fruits, which make up the bulk of bearded dragon food, there are other factors to consider before you accept responsibility for your “Beardie”. One of the most important aspects is to determine how healthy your potential pet is! Signs of this are shown by how active and alert a dragon appears and the way it keeps its head in an upright position. Also determine whether the dragon directs its attention towards you, when you approach.
Dragon inspection
Take the time to inspect the body of the dragon and keep your eyes open for signs of scars, burns or other abrasions. If there is an apparent injury, determine whether it’s infected and is in a healing process. Check their eyes to ensure they are not running and there are no indications of an infection on its face. Be aware of their overall appearance, especially regarding any aspects related to diet and it being fed the correct bearded dragon food.
It is generally recommended that when choosing a bearded dragon, its eyes should be wide and open; with an indication of a proper bearded dragon food diet being a well cared for appearance, that shows no signs of its bones in the hips, or on its back.
Your healthy pet
Enquire from the breeder who is supplying the dragon about the food it’s been fed, which should primarily consist of vegetables and meat in the form of crickets and cockroaches. One thing to note regarding your bearded dragon food, is that feeding them domestic cockroaches, is not a good idea. To maintain a “Beardie” in the best health, it’s advised that you feed live and nourishing cockroaches and live crickets, obtained from established breeders.
If you gave a large number of Bearded Dragons to choose your pet from, first direct your attention towards those that display the greatest activity. They are usually the dominant dragons and are generally regarded as being the preferred choice.
