A Lesson in Feeder Insects: Dubia Roaches
Our Top Choice for Your Pet Reptile
It’s not exactly a secret around here that we love Dubia roaches. After all, ABDragons was founded on one small tub of Dubia roaches that expanded into a family business! But our love for roaches is really rooted in our love for reptiles: including our pets, your pets, and pet reptiles everywhere. Dubia roaches are one of the most nutritious, healthy, and delicious—at least from a reptile’s perspective—food sources for reptiles. We take a lot of pride in providing the highest quality roaches to our customers across the country.
If you are new to reptile ownership or feeding a pet dragon or lizard, you may not yet understand the buzz about Dubia roaches and why they are so highly regarded as feeder insects. We wanted to take a minute and share a little bit of background on these feeder insects to shine a light on their benefits to your pet, as well as throw in a few fun facts. After all, who doesn’t love fun facts about cockroaches?
- Dubia roaches are the species blaptica Dubia. They are also known as the orange-spotted roach, Guyana spotted roach, and Argentinian wood roach. They are a medium-size roach naturally found in Costa Rica and across Central and South America.
- Dubia roaches are born completely white, except for their dark eyes. In the 24 hours after birth, they turn a dark brown to black color—sometimes, you can see faint orange patterns on their bodies (which is where you get the “orange-spotted” name).
- You can start a Dubia roach colony with just 100 roaches. While it takes a good deal of work, breeding roaches can give you a reliable and sustainable food source for your pet. If you are interested, ABDragons has a lot of resources for roach breeders to help you start and grow a thriving colony.
- Dubia roaches provide 7 times the nutritional benefits of a cricket. Not to knock on our cricket friends, but Dubia roaches definitely have the edge in this matchup: They are packed with the nutrients your reptiles need without the risk of carrying parasites.
