How to Keep Dubia Roaches Alive

You have probably heard many people talk about how Dubia roaches are very easy to care for as long as you follow some basic advice—and that’s true. Still, starting to breed Dubia roaches can be nerve wracking: You want to keep your roaches healthy and happy so you have a sustainable source of live feeder insects for your reptile.
There are three things that your roaches need to thrive: food, water and moisture, and a dark, safe enclosure. Let’s break each of these things down to start.
Food
Your roaches should have constant access to roach chow. You should also offer fresh fruits and vegetables approximately once or twice a week. Make sure you clear what hasn’t been eaten within 24-48 hours to avoid mold growth: Mold is the enemy of roach colonies.
Water and Moisture
Speaking of mold, we want to caution you against setting any sort of water dish or wet sponge within your colony. Young Dubias can drown in a water dish, and a wet sponge or towel can quickly harbor mold. The best solution that we have found is to use water crystals. Moisture, and humidity, is also important within your colony and key for successful molting. Aim for humidity levels of 40 to 60 percent.
A Dark, Safe Enclosure
We recommend using plastic storage bins, however avoid clear. Colored bins can help to create that dark environment that your roaches need to grow and reproduce. The enclosure should be kept between 70-90 degrees Fahrenheit.
