Product Description
Blue Death Feigning Beetles (Asbolus verrucosus)
Blue Death Feigning Beetles are one of the most unique and entertaining invertebrate pets available. Native to the deserts of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, these hardy beetles are known for their stunning powder-blue color, curious personalities, and incredibly easy care requirements. Whether you're new to keeping insects or are an experienced invertebrate enthusiast, Blue Death Feigning Beetles make an excellent addition to any collection.
One of their most recognizable features is their beautiful blue appearance. This color comes from a natural waxy coating that protects them from the harsh desert environment by helping reduce moisture loss. If the beetles become wet or are exposed to high humidity, the wax temporarily disappears, causing them to appear dark gray or black. Don't worry—once they dry out, the protective coating returns, and so does their vibrant blue color.
These beetles are active during both the day and evening, often exploring their enclosure, climbing over rocks and branches, and interacting with one another. They are a peaceful, communal species and can be kept together in groups, making them enjoyable to watch as they go about their daily activities. Their famous defense mechanism is "playing dead" when they feel threatened, which is where they get the name "Death Feigning Beetle."
Blue Death Feigning Beetles are extremely low maintenance and require a dry, well-ventilated enclosure with a sandy or desert-style substrate. Decorations such as rocks, cork bark, and climbing branches provide enrichment and mimic their natural habitat. Because they come from arid environments, high humidity should be avoided.
Feeding is simple. We feed our beetles a high-quality fish food flake as their staple diet, supplemented with occasional fresh vegetables such as carrots, squash, or leafy greens. A water dish is not necessary—and is actually discouraged—as excessive moisture can be harmful. The moisture they need comes from the fresh vegetables offered occasionally.
With proper care, Blue Death Feigning Beetles can live for many years, making them one of the longest-lived pet beetles available. Their hardiness, striking appearance, fascinating behaviors, and minimal care requirements make them a fantastic choice for classrooms, families, first-time insect keepers, and experienced hobbyists alike.
