Providing Your Pet Reptile With a Nutritious Diet
Are you wondering what to feed your new crested gecko? Well, there’s good news for you! This reptile is among the most popular varieties kept as household pets. Not only are they hardy, very easy to handle, and fairly docile, they are easy to feed. Your crested gecko is an omnivore, meaning they will eat both plant and animal matter.
Because of the popularity and demand for crested gecko foods, many brands like Repashy Superfoods make a premixed formula that can be mixed with water. While this is a convenient way to keep your crested gecko fed, there’s no substitute for live feeder insects. Variety in your gecko’s diet is key to keeping them happy and healthy. We would suggest using premixed crested gecko food along with several other options to ensure a well-rounded diet:
• Live feeder insects - Your crested gecko will love live insects like mealworms and waxworms. Insects can be gut-loaded and dusted with a calcium and vitamin D3 powdered supplement for an extra nutritional boost. Feeding your crested gecko Dubia roaches several times a week as a treat is also a good way to pack in more nutrients.
• Sweet fruits - Crested geckos love sweet fruits as an occasional treat. You can use jarred baby foods like peaches, bananas, or apricots, or offer mashed fresh fruit like pear or mango. While fruit shouldn’t be an everyday offering for your gecko, once or twice a month is just fine.
• A fresh water source - Your crested gecko should always have access to a shallow dish of dechlorinated water or spring water in their enclosure. Keep the water fresh, replacing it daily even if they don’t appear to be drinking it.
If you provide all of the above to your crested gecko, they should have a highly nutritious and delicious diet! Do you have any other questions or concerns about caring for your crested gecko? Let us know how our team can be a resource for you.
